Product Overview

The Argentina sunflower seed and derivatives market encompasses oilseed and confectionery sunflower production together with crude and refined sunflower oil, high-oleic oil, sunflower meal, cake, lecithin and biofuel feedstock. Argentina produced a record 4.7 MMT of sunflower in the 2024/25 domestic campaign, from 2.05 million hectares, with average yields of 2.34 tons per hectare. USDA’s subsequent 2025/26 forecast of 7.0 MMT reflects a much stronger production cycle and expanding processing economics.

Strategic Importance in the Global Supply Chain

Argentina has become an increasingly important counter-seasonal supplier because its sunflower harvest begins around February, several months after the principal Black Sea harvest. USDA estimates that Argentina could account for approximately 10% of global sunflowerseed production in 2025/26, meaning a 7.0 MMT crop can materially replenish international availability when Black Sea supplies remain constrained.

The country’s strategic importance is amplified by processing rather than seed production alone. In 2025/26, USDA projects Argentine sunflowerseed crush at roughly 5.3–5.6 MMT, while sunflower oil and meal exports are each expected to approach 1.8 MMT, demonstrating the country’s ability to convert domestic seed into higher-value tradable products.

Production is geographically concentrated but increasingly diversified. The 2024/25 crop covered 2.05 million hectares, with major expansion in Santa Fe and central and western agricultural zones, while USDA data identify Buenos Aires, Santa Fe and La Pampa as major production areas. This geographic spread reduces dependence on a single growing corridor and improves the sector’s resilience to localized weather disruptions.

Argentina’s role is also supported by export infrastructure along the Atlantic corridor. New processing investment is connecting sunflower production with storage, crushing and port facilities, while Louis Dreyfus Company’s June 2026 announcement of a new Bahía Blanca facility targets up to 4,000 tons per day of sunflower or soybean crushing capacity.

Supply & Demand Analysis

Sunflower supply has entered a structurally stronger phase after several years of volatility. The Buenos Aires Grains Exchange recorded 4.7 MMT of production in 2024/25, a historic record for its series, while USDA’s April 2026 outlook raised 2025/26 production to 7.0 MMT, representing a 25% annual increase. The difference between the two estimates reflects changing production assumptions and demonstrates the sensitivity of Argentina’s sunflower balance to acreage and yield conditions.

Demand is dominated by crushing, because the domestic value chain captures greater margins by converting seed into oil and meal. USDA projects 2025/26 sunflowerseed crush at approximately 5.3 MMT in Argentina, compared with about 4.83 MMT in 2024/25 in its latest country report. The resulting meal production is expected to reach roughly 2.37 MMT, while meal exports are forecast near 1.7 MMT, leaving a meaningful domestic feed component.

Sunflower oil represents the highest-value derivative in the chain. USDA expects Argentine sunflower oil exports to reach 1.8 MMT in 2025/26, an 8% increase, marking the strongest export level in more than 25 years. India represented 46% of Argentina’s sunflower oil exports in calendar 2025, while Iraq has become the country’s third-largest buyer as supply disruptions in Ukraine altered traditional procurement patterns.

Seed exports are also becoming more relevant. Argentina historically exported less than 200,000 tons of sunflowerseed annually because most seed was crushed domestically, but USDA forecasts exports of 624,000 tons in 2024/25 and 600,000 tons in 2025/26. Shipments have increasingly moved toward the European Union, particularly Bulgaria and Romania, where attractive crushing margins have encouraged imports of Argentine seed.

On the demand side, global vegetable-oil consumption, feed requirements and specialty oil applications provide three complementary growth channels. High-oleic sunflower oil benefits from food manufacturers seeking stable frying performance, while sunflower meal remains an important protein ingredient. Argentina therefore competes simultaneously in edible oil, animal nutrition and industrial feedstock markets rather than relying on a single end-use segment. USDA’s 2025/26 forecast of 1.8 MMT each for oil and meal exports illustrates the balance between these two major derivative streams.

Market Growth Factors

Market Drivers

  • Record production potential: 2025/26 output is forecast at 7.0 MMT, about 25% above the previous year.
  • Expanding acreage: The 2024/25 crop reached 2.05 million hectares, the second-highest planted area in the domestic series.
  • Counter-seasonal supply: Argentina’s February harvest can supplement global availability after the September Black Sea harvest cycle.
  • Export-oriented crushing: 2025/26 sunflower oil and meal exports are each forecast at approximately 1.8 MMT.
  • Asian demand: India accounted for 46% of Argentina’s sunflower oil exports in 2025.
  • Industrial investment: LDC’s new facility is designed for up to 4,000 tons/day of sunflower or soybean crushing.

Market Restraints

  • Weather exposure: sunflower yields remain sensitive to drought, with 2024/25 regional estimates around 2.0–2.2 tons/ha during an earlier crop assessment.
  • Commodity substitution: farmers compare sunflower profitability directly with corn and soy, limiting acreage expansion when relative margins weaken.
  • Export-tax burden: Argentina’s sunflower seed export tax was 7% in USDA’s long-term projections, although temporary reductions have occurred.
  • Global competition: Russia, Ukraine and the EU collectively remain much larger production centers than Argentina, with global 2025 production near 52.1 MMT.
  • Price volatility: global sunflower oil FOB prices averaged nearly $1,300/ton during September 2025–March 2026, versus approximately $1,100/ton a year earlier.
  • Logistics and currency risk: export-oriented processors face changing freight, financing and exchange-rate conditions across transactions involving volumes above 500,000 tons annually.

Market Segmentation

By seed type, oilseed sunflower represents the principal commercial segment because the overwhelming majority of industrial crushing capacity is directed toward oil and meal. Confectionery sunflower occupies a smaller but higher-specialization niche, with unprocessed seed exports becoming more commercially attractive as export volumes moved toward 600,000 tons in 2025/26. Oilseed varieties therefore dominate volume, while confectionery varieties offer differentiated margins and specialty-market opportunities.

By derivative, crude sunflower oil and refined sunflower oil account for the largest value pools. Argentina is forecast to export about 1.8 MMT of sunflower oil in 2025/26, while sunflower meal exports are also expected to reach 1.8 MMT. High-oleic oil is a smaller specialty category but benefits from premium food-processing applications, while lecithin and biodiesel feedstock represent downstream niches that can increase the value extracted from each ton of seed.

By application, household cooking remains important, but industrial food processing and foodservice provide large-volume demand for bulk oil. Feed manufacturing and livestock production absorb sunflower meal, with Argentina’s 2025/26 meal production forecast around 2.37 MMT and domestic consumption estimated at roughly 550,000 tons. Biofuel applications add another outlet as Argentina’s broader vegetable-oil processing infrastructure increasingly integrates multiple oilseed streams.

By end user, edible-oil manufacturers, food processors and feed producers form the core customer base. Export markets are increasingly important relative to domestic demand, with India taking 46% of sunflower oil exports in 2025 and the European Union emerging as a major destination for seed. The combination of domestic crushing and export distribution allows processors to redirect product between oil, meal and seed markets according to margins.

By distribution channel, export markets represent the most strategically significant channel for derivatives, while wholesale and retail packaged oils serve Argentina’s domestic consumers. The market’s export orientation is evident from the forecast 1.8 MMT of sunflower oil exports and 1.7–1.8 MMT of meal exports in 2025/26, compared with a much smaller direct trade flow for unprocessed seed in historical years.

Trade Dynamics

Argentina’s sunflower trade is shifting toward a higher-volume combination of seed and processed-product exports. USDA forecasts 600 thousand tonnes of sunflowerseed exports for 2025/26, compared with historical annual volumes below 200,000 tons, while sunflower oil and meal exports are each projected at approximately 1.8 MMT. The European Union, particularly Bulgaria and Romania, has been a significant destination for seed because of favorable regional crushing margins.

India is the dominant sunflower oil destination, absorbing 46% of Argentine sunflower oil exports in calendar 2025. Iraq has also risen to become the third-largest buyer, illustrating how geopolitical disruptions can redirect trade toward Argentine supply. Argentina’s sunflowerseed export tax has historically been around 7%, with a temporary reduction to 5.5% announced in January 2025, indicating that fiscal policy can influence the competitiveness of unprocessed seed exports.

Role in Global Price Discovery

Argentina’s influence on sunflower prices is rising because the country supplies the international market during a different seasonal window from Russia and Ukraine. Global sunflower oil FOB prices averaged approximately $1,300/ton between September 2025 and March 2026, up from about $1,100/ton during the comparable previous period.

Domestic seed prices are influenced by competing crop margins, crushing spreads, export duties and global oil values. The sharp rise in production from 4.7 MMT in 2024/25 to the USDA’s 7.0 MMT 2025/26 forecast should increase local supply and potentially moderate farm-gate premiums when logistics are functioning normally.

Argentina does not possess unilateral price-setting power because Russia and Ukraine remain much larger suppliers, but its counter-seasonal availability provides meaningful marginal price influence. The country’s 600,000-ton projected seed export program and 1.8 MMT oil export forecast give Argentine processors greater leverage in regional procurement and destination-market negotiations.

Competitive Landscape

The competitive landscape combines large integrated agribusinesses, domestic oil manufacturers, international commodity traders and specialized seed companies. Leading participants include Molinos Río de la Plata, Aceitera General Deheza, Cargill, COFCO International and Louis Dreyfus Company, alongside other processors and traders. Industry competition increasingly centers on access to seed, crushing efficiency, storage, port connectivity and the ability to switch between domestic and export markets.

Investment is becoming a major competitive differentiator. Louis Dreyfus Company announced in June 2026 a new Bahía Blanca sunflower and soybean processing facility capable of crushing up to 4,000 tons per day, integrating storage, logistics and deep-water port infrastructure. USDA also reported investments by Molinos Agro to expand sunflower crushing at San Lorenzo and by LDC to add a high-oil seed processing line at Timbúes.

Through 2032, competitive advantage is expected to increasingly depend on integrated sourcing and processing rather than standalone crushing volume. A processor able to handle 4,000 tons/day, access export terminals and offer high-oleic or other specialty specifications can potentially capture more value than a conventional commodity-only operator. Sustainability, energy efficiency and traceability are likewise becoming more important in international procurement decisions.
